New in Paperback

The Help, by Kathryn Stockett

-  1962, Jackson Mississippi. Aibileen is a black maid raising her 17th white child.  Minny is a black maid with a sharp tongue who can't hold on to a job.   Skeeter is a white woman starting to figure out that the world may not be as civilized a place as the had thought.

The Long Road, by Andrea Levy

-  The author of Small Island is back with a story of slavery in Jamaica. Well, plotted, beautifully written, with Levy's characteristic sense of humour.

Under Heaven, by Guy Gavriel Kay

-  Gavriel Kay's latest, set in 8th century China, is an epic tale of honour, love, and war.  Kay's characters are magnificently crafted and his attention to detail, as always, carries the day.

My Favourite adult fiction book of 2010 - Room, by Emma Donoghue

Emma Donogue says that she took her inspiration for Room from the horrific story of Elisabeth Fritzl, the Austrian woman whose father kept her imprisoned in his basement for 24 years.  Whatever the book's impetus, Donoghue has managed to create a story that is realistic, powerful, and disturbing.

The story is told from the point-of-view of Jack, a 5-year old boy who was born in an 11 x 11 foot room, the son of his captive mother and her abductor.  Jack has never left Room and his entire life, his every perception, is defined by what can be shaped and attained in it's space.  I don't want to write a spoiler so I will only say that the book can be divided into two parts:  Jack's life within Room and his life after he has managed to escape.

The first part of the book, inside of Room, is very cleverly conceived. Ma (as Jack refers to his mother) has had to be creative in her explanations of the world. Jack perceives everything within Room as being real and everything else as being TV, or made up.  The pages spent exploring the way Jack thinks are unceasingly fascinating.  Every minute aspect of life, and there is no concept too large or too small to escape this truth, is defined by the space in which Jack lives.  He has no frame of reference for travelling more than 11 feet in any direction. When something leaves Room - toilet waste, for example - he has no way of understanding where it has gone.  Ma explains that toilet waste is carried through pipes to the sea, but the sea is an abstract concept.  For that matter, so are pipes.  Jack, having never met a human being other than his mother and his captor, has no way of distinguishing the reality of a TV newscaster from that of Dora the Explorer.

The second part of the book deals with what happens after Jack and his mother have escaped from Room.  Jack's mother has every reason to want to escape. Her view of the world encompasses so much more than what is inside Room.  Jack, however, has never known anything different.  What Ma, and we as readers, find disturbing is just life for Jack.  It's the only truth he's ever known. When Jack leaves Room he is forced to come to terms with the world on a scope he has a hard time comprehending.  His eyes don't work properly, nor do his legs.  He has no basis for normal interaction with the people he meets and, far worse, they have no basis for understanding him.

Room is well written and well conceived.  It is believable and disturbing.  You won't be comfortable with everything you read, but I think that's part of what makes this book so good.

Honourable mention:  The Help, by Kathryn Stockett

Honourable mention:  Cutting for Stone, by Abraham Verghese

My favourite young adult book of 2010 - Mockingjay:  book 3 of The Hunger Games.

Suzanne Collin's Hunger Games trilogy is brought to a riveting conclusion in Mockingjay.  What began as a promising sci-fi adventure in book 1 (The Hunger Games), and developed into a thought-provoking dystopia in book 2 (Catching Fire), has blossomed into a exhilarating tale of morality and what it means to be human in book 3 (Mockingjay.) All the while maintaining the pace and excitement of a good adventure story.

The concept of a futuristic dystopia is hardly new, nor is the idea of taking a regular average person and testing her with extraordinary pressures and circumstances.  What sets this book apart is the detail and consistency of the world Collins has envisioned, and the depth and passion of her characters.  The events and circumstances faced by the characters in Mockingjay systematically wear them down, both physically and mentally.  The heroes are pushed harder and harder until the only options are to succeed or to be shattered completely.

The world of Mockingjay is completely believable.  More importantly, so are the characters.  Add an unrelenting array of moral issues and the result is a truly memorable book.

Honourable mention:  Clockwork Angel, by Cassandra Clare

Honourable mention:  Behemoth, by Scott Westerfeld.
